The Prevention Division is dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles and preventing substance abuse and violence. With the help of volunteers and outreach programs, staff members collaborate with social service agencies, parents, teachers, clergy, business leaders, hospitals, local government officials, youth and adults to involve communities in such things as:

  • Parent workshops
  • Promotion of healthy lifestyles
  • Peer leadership activities
  • Community events

Early Intervention Program

Early intervention Program (EIP)
The Early Intervention Program is for adolescents ages 13-20 who are at risk for, or who may already be experiencing, problems related to alcohol, tobacco or other drug use. Evaluations of the EIP have shown that approximately 80% of youth completing this program are not cited for alcohol/drug use within the following 12 months. In addition, results also indicate that parents report a more positive relationship with their child and more effective communication tools about substance abuse. Youth completing the EIP report a greater understanding of the risks associated with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and less involvement with peers who use drugs.
Services: Brief assessment, youth and parent education and support sessions, assistance in referral to other needed community resources, case management, and follow-up.
Fee: There is a fee associated with the program; however, scholarships are available to those who qualify.
Eligibility: Any young person age 13-20 is eligible for the program. Referrals can be made by anyone, via telephone, fax or e-mail.

Zero-Tolerance Under 21 DUI Program (ZT)
This specialized program, supported and approved by the Kentucky Division of Behavioral Health and Substance Abuse, provides services to young people ages 16-20 who have been charged with state regulation KRS 189A.010(1)(e), with a Zero Tolerance under 21 DUI offense. Services are similar as described above for the Early Intervention Program, with additional emphasis on impaired driving. Parents are not require to attend if the young person is over age 18.
Fee: $175
Eligibility: Young persons cited for a ZTDUI offense while under the age of 21.

A Healthy Journey for TwoWhat pregnant women need to know about tobacco, alcohol and other drug use
Taught by a trained prevention specialist, a “Healthy Journey for Two” is a two-hour class for women of all ages that covers how tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs affect their unborn children during pregnancy and while breast-feeding.
Fee: No cost to participants.
Eligibility: Must be residents of Bullitt, Henry, Jefferson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer or Trimble counties in Kentucky.

Guiding Good Choices
This multimedia skills training program is for parents of children grades 4-8, and can be provided at schools, churches and other locations throughout the region. The program can be conducted day or evening hours, and some weekend times are possible.The program consists of five, 2-hour sessions. Each session uses video, workbook exercises and guided discussions to meet participants' needs. Parents learn to increase their children's opportunities for family involvement and to strengthen family bonds; establish a family position on drugs; teach skills needed by children and adolescents such as effective refusal; provide effective reinforcement and appropriate consequences; resolve family conflict; and express and control anger. Certified prevention specialists are trained to provide this course. Family Activity Books for parents provide follow-up activities for use long after the sessions are over.
Fee: $20 per participant to cover the cost of the Family Activity Book.

Staying Connected With Your Teen
This program shows teenagers’ parents practical ways to set family standards and take an active interest in their children. Program is five or six sessions of 60-90 minutes. Parents Who Care stimulates interaction between parents and their teenagers. It provides step-by-step directions for holding family meetings and resolving conflicts, and strengthens family bonds while reducing teenagers’ risks. Each topic is covered in a simple, entertaining format so that all types of families can make the program work for them.
Fee: Materials can be purchased for $20.
Eligibility: No restrictions.
